Ventura County Family Medicine
is now a 4-year program

We are excited to participate in the AIRE program for innovation in Family Medicine training.  The addition of a fourth year of practice will bring many benefits:

  • preserve our full spectrum of training

  • incorporate more community health, behavioral health, and ambulatory education

  • provide a training experience more adaptable to the needs of the resident's future practice setting

  • enhance resident well being and joy of practice.

Thanks to the forward-thinking leadership of the Ventura County Health Care Agency, we will maintain a class size of 15 residents per year, preserving our large pipeline of primary care physicians.  Applicants during the 2023-2024 ERAS Match cycle will commit to 4 years of top tier Family Medicine training.

OUR MISSION

We are full spectrum Family Medicine.
Our graduates are empowered to serve with continuity of care in all settings, valuing all peoples.

As one of the original Family Medicine training programs, we take seriously the idea that a well-trained family doctor is the centerpiece of a strong healthcare system, especially in resource-limited settings.  That's why we offer such a breadth of maternity, inpatient, and emergency training in addition to a strong continuity practice.

While our history has earned us respect as one of the country's top Family Medicine programs, we are evolving to keep up with a changing landscape.  We've started programs in Palliative Medicine and Addiction Medicine.  We've formed partnerships to launch a Community Medicine rotation.  We've embarked on a deep dive into assessing and improving our culture around equity and inclusion.

We are committed to cultivating another generation of the finest Family Doctors.

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) is a premier site for full spectrum, unopposed Family Medicine residency training. VCMC is one of the original 15 programs approved in Family Practice and has been educating physicians since 1928. Graduates of the program are equipped with the skills to work anywhere, especially with the medically underserved.  The program is committed to equity and inclusion.

Ventura residents establish continuity primary care practices for a diverse patient population in the Academic Family Medicine Center while developing strong inpatient skills managing VCMC's medicine, surgery, OB, ICU, ER, and pediatrics services. They learn from weekly protected didactic time, enjoy each others' company during an annual all-resident retreat, and live in Ventura, California.

We're proud to have built a reputation that has been recognized among the top few nationwide since the rankings were first published in 2014, including several years at #1.  It's a testament to how strongly our alumni feel about their training and the positive impact they have on those who see and benefit from their work.
