Residency Interviews

We choose to interview many applicants, as we believe that successful residents are chosen from interviews and not paperwork. Traditionally, we conduct interviews twice a week, beginning in November and carrying on through January.

The interview day consists of an overview slide show, interviews with a faculty member and resident, tour of the VCMC campus, lunch and a resident Q&A panel. Please email the Medical Education staff if you would like arrangements to be made to stay with a member of the VCMC family or if you a have a significant other who you would like to bring along.

For those new to the area, don't forget to find out some of the highlights of Ventura that you can tour after the interview.

International Medical Graduates

We receive numerous requests for "criteria" to accept an application from international medical students and graduates. Our selection committee requires the following for interview consideration:
- a complete ERAS application
- no more than one failed attempt at passing USMLE step 1
- Application Status Letter for medical school grads or evidence of application to the Medical Board of California
We look at each application individually and have not set numerical criteria for board scores, particular clinical experience nor year of graduation.

4th year Medical Student Externship

Our residency program offers those who are interested in completing a clerkship at our program the opportunity to do so. Most students choose to complete a full 4-week rotation, but certainly accomodations can be made for lengths between 1-4 weeks. The experience can be catered to the interest of the student and usually combine a mixture of both inpatient and outpatient exposure. Since we limit the number of students on each rotation, we ask you to rank your preferences for the rotation from amongst the different specialties offered. Specialties include Inpatient Medicine/Pediatrics, Obstretrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Intensive Care Unit, Emerency Department (except July-Aug), Outpatient Pediatrics, Ortho/Sports Medicine.

We have seen a tremendous increase in demand for our 4th year medical studentapply now externships.  Since we have a limited number of rotations for externs at a given time, and desire to maintain the quality of the experience, you may not hear from us immediately regarding your request for an externship.  Please be reassured that every application that is submitted is reviewed in its entirety.  We may not be able to grant externships immediately as applications come in, but will need to hold applications temporarily so that applicants can be evaluated amongst a larger group of peers.  We anticipate for those that have submitted applications early (prior to April), to hear a response no later than May 15th.

This date is NOT a deadline for applications, but simply a deadline of when you would expect to hear a response from us for those that have applied early.  We apologize in advance for the inconvenience this may cause in delaying the scheduling of your 4th year, but be assured that this process is aimed to maintain the quality of the externship experience at VCMC.
