2015 Summer Scholars Program
We look forward to having five scholars this year for an 8-week program which we anticipate will run from June 22 to August 14. In past years, we have been able to offer a $1500 stipend; our funding request for this year is currently under consideration.
Please check back in the spring for details about the 2015 program and the application form.
The Summer Scholar Program at VCMC provides undergraduate students considering careers in medicine and other health care professions with an opportunity to spend time during the summer with the medical faculty and the physicians-in-training of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center.
Summer Scholars are placed with faculty preceptors who coordinate opportunities to observe or participate in the daily patient care activities of resident physicians. Student Scholars attend teaching conferences at the Medical Center, make rounds with medical staff and observe patient interactions and procedures as appropriate (e.g., live births, surgeries, emergency room visits, autopsies, etc.) Each of the Student Scholars becomes involved in a clinical research project. Some have presented their findings at the annual UCLA Family Medicine Research Forum.
Many of our students cite the experience as a formative one in their pursuit of a career in health care. We have even welcomed graduates of the Scholars program into our residency program here at VCMC!
