VCMC System
The Hospital
VCMC is a full-service acute care hospital. Inpatient care is provided inthe Intensive Care Unit andDirect Observation Unit, Telemetry, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Medical Surgery floors, the Pediatric wing, the Obstetrics/Gynecology floors, and the Hillmont Psychiatric Unit. During the most recently completed year VCMC provided 40,139 inpatient service days.
VCMC exists to provide access for under-served individuals who experience barriers to care due to any combination of economic, cultural, or lifestyle conditions. Commonly referred to as the "safety net" population, this group accounts for over three fourths of the care provided by VCMC. We provide the majority of the care that is received by this group in Ventura County.
Safety net patients present diverse requirements, and our hospital is uniquely positioned to respond to this challenge. The array of services we provide, together with our professional staffing model, are specifically designed to benefit the safety net patient.
The physicians on VCMC's staff represent high levels of training and credentialing. Each physician on staff is board certified in their respective field. Our ability to deliver care through board certified physicians insure that members of the safety net population who are treated at VCMC receive excellent care.
A key component to achieving maximum access is our Family Practice Residency program. The program comprises 39 practicing residents supported by a strong faculty and program. When a patient's first physician encounter is with a practitioner possessing a broad range of medical training and experience, the quality of care that follows the patient throughout the encounter will be maximized. Our residency program, associated with the UCLA School of Medicine, imposes strict academic standards on both the residents and faculty. Our patients are the direct beneficiaries.
Superior care is a result of state-of-the-art equipment, best medical practice, and consciousmanagement objectives. Our fixed asset programs strive to provide state-of-the-art equipment. Best medical practice results in faster and more accurate diagnosis. The efforts of management improve patient throughput, resulting in the ability to increase both patient volumes and improve patient outcomes. We continue to be pleased by our ability to provide our safety net population with high quality care in a dignified and efficient manner.
Ambulatory Care
The VCMC Department of Ambulatory Care outpatient system is comprised of two major elements: the satellite clinic system offering primary care; and the campus based clinics offering specialist services.Satellite Clinics
The physicians and staff of the Ambulatory Care Department have developed a workable system to deliver primary medical care at the local community level, where the patient lives or attends school. Patients receive routine checkups, immunizations, treatment for common acute illnesses, treatment of minor injuries, early detection and treatment of common chronic conditions associated with aging, minor surgery procedures, pregnancy care before and after childbirth, family planning service, counseling on health matters, and screening for referral to specialized medical services.
Campus Clinics
Patients with medical needs beyond primary care or general medicine are referred to the specialized medical services and clinics generally located on or adjacent to the VCMC campus in Ventura. These clinics specialize in the practice of internal medicine and deal with a higher complexity of illness. The intent continues to be to maintain the patient in an outpatient setting.
The Ambulatory Care Department, with its satellite and campus clinics, serves as a major source of outpatient health care for the county's indigent population, and for county residents who do not have access to private physicians. The department provides a wide range of outpatient comprehensive prenatal services, gynecological care, family planning, pediatrics, well-child checkups, surgical services, orthopedics and adult medicine. The goal of the department is to ensure that high quality outpatient care is provided to all patients needing services, regardless of race, creed, color or economic status, and to treat each patient with kindness, consideration and understanding.
