VCMC Family Medicine Residency
Duty Hour Exception Documentation
The ACGME program requirements state that in unusual circumstances, residents, on their own initiative, may remain beyond their scheduled period of duty to continue to provide care. Examples might be caring for a laboring patient, performing a continuity delivery, or humanistic attention to the needs of a patient or family. “Under those circumstances, the resident must document the reasons for remaining to care for the patient in question and submit that documentation in every circumstance to the program director.” (ACGME Common Program Requirements) Additionally, the faculty want to monitor these occurrences and identify if there are any system issues contributing to these circumstances that could be modified for the future.
Please document below the reasons for your staying beyond your normal duty hours, and submit. This will send the results directly to the Program Director.
